Entrance is located in via XX Settembre between the Accademia di Studi Lunigianesi "Giovanni Cappellini" seat and the Clarisse convent and you arrive between via XXVII Marzo in front of the entrance of the museum of San Giorgio Castle.
The facility, which is free, will be open from June 1st to September 30th on working days from 7.00 to 21.30 and on holidays from 8.30 to 21.30 and from October 1st to May 31st on working days from 7.00 to 20.30 and on holidays from 9.00 to 20.30. The lift will be closed at night.
The typology of the facility is that of inclined lift with ropes for people transport, with constant slope straight route, overall length of approximately 40-45 meters. A beautiful 1997 sculpture by Elisa Corsini, "Chimera", has been given on a free loan by the author in order to enrich aesthetically the place.
The lift has a video surveillance system with properly located cameras whose signal is transferred to the control-room managed by the Cooperative Transport Company, which allows the staff to keep watch on what happens next to landing areas. The cage has a panoramic view with glass walls and roof and it can carry 8 people. It has a bi-dimensional, phonic communication system with the control station which is located at ATC, that will manage the facility, being Public Transport, and with whom the municipal administration has drawn up an agreement for management.
The construction of this lift is the first of a series of important urban requalification works. By 2010, another vertical panoramic lift will be constructed between Via del Prione and Via XX Settembre with exit in Via Indipendenza, thus obtaining a single mechanized route that will be able to link the city centre, from Via del Prione to Via XXVII Marzo. This will allow citizens living in the hill area to have a better access to city centre and will allow tourists and citizens living in the centre to have an easier access to the castle museum through this direct link to the same San Giorgio castle. The construction of the lift is another step towards the project of making La Spezia a city without obstacles, a city able to encourage the moving autonomy for everyone.
Service is managed by ATC Esercizio
